1979年9月18日，邓小平举行宴会，欢迎美国前总统尼克松访华。尼克松对邓小平说：“回顾过去的七年，我觉得美国能为中国做些什么也许谈得太多了，而美国能从中国学些什么却谈得不够。有一点我们可以从中国获得教益，那就是中国人惯于采取长期观点，不仅考虑到几十年，而且考虑到几百年……。”
On september18，1979，Deng Xiaoping held a dinner in honour of former US President Nixon，welcoming him to China.Nixon said to Deng Xiaoping：“Looking back on the past seven years，I think there has been too much talk about what the United States could do for China，while there has been far less discussion on what the former could learn from the latter.One thing we can benefit from China is that the Chinese usually adopt a long—term point of view which takes into consideration not only decades but also centuries…”
