1989年2月26日，中央军委主席邓小平在北京宴请美国总统布什。邓小平说，10年来中美两国关系的发展是平衡的，尽管也存在一些问题。中美要以增加信任、减少麻烦的精神发展两国关系。布什说，美中关系的发展有巨大的潜力。邓小平还对布什说："中国的问题，压倒一切的是需要稳定。没有稳定的环境，什么都吹了，已经取得的成果也会失掉。希望外国朋友理解这一点。"
Deng Xiaoping, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, hosted a banquet for the visiting US President Bush in Beijing on February 26, 1989.
Deng said that over the past 10 years, the development of the relations betwen China and the United States was balanced although there existed some problems. China and the United States should develop their relations in the spirit of enhancing trust and reducing trouble. Bush said that there were great potentials for the development of the US-China relations. Deng Xiaoping also told Bush :"In China the overriding need is for stability. Without a stable environment, we can accomplish nothing and may even lose what we have achieved. We hope our foreign friends will understand this point."
