1994年11月14日，江泽民主席在印度尼西亚茂物出席亚太经济合作组织领导人非正式会议。会前，江泽民与克林顿进行正式会晤。江泽民主席表示：我们希望同美国增加信任、减少麻烦、发展合作、不搞对抗。遵循中美三个联合公报确定的原则，推动中美关系不断向前发展。并提出了双方都着眼于世界大局和21世纪，从更广泛的范围和长远的观点处理中美关系等五项原则。
President Jiang Zemin attended the Informal APEC Leadership Meeting in Bogor, Indonesia, on November 14, 1994. Before the meeting , Jiang and Clinton held a formal meeting. Jiang said that China hopes to enhance mutual trust, reduce troubles, develop co-operation and keep from confrontation with the United States and hopes that both countries would follow the principles set in the three joint communiques to push the Sino-US relations to advance continuously. Jiang also put forward five principles to guide the Sino-US relations, including the principle that both sides set their eyes on the world situation and the 21st century and handle the Sino-US relations in a more extensive scope and from a long-term point of view.
