LoverWho Brought Down Boeing Chief

The woman whose affair with the boss of Boeing led to himbeingsacked from his $1.1 million-a-year job was named yesterday asanexecutive 20 years his junior.

Debra Peabody, a 48-year-old divorcee who worked fortheplane-makers chief government lobbyist, met HarryStonecipherearlier this year at a corporate retreat inCalifornia.

Their affair became public on Monday when Boeing announced thatitwas firing Mr Stonecipher, a married father of two, forbreachingthe companys code of conduct - a code introduced by MrStonecipherand imposed on all the companys 160,000 staff.

According to reports, Miss Peabody, who had worked at Boeingfor25 years, only began her romantic entanglement with the thechiefexecutive in January, when the pair attended a company eventinPalm Desert, California. Their affair was only weeks old whenanunnamed female employee obtained correspondence between the two-said to be of an intimate nature - and sent copies to theBoeingchairman, Lew Platt, and the companys ethics officials.

That led to a 10-day investigation at the end of whichMrStonecipher admitted the affair and was asked to hand inhisresignation. The companys code of conduct states thatemployeeswill not engage in conduct or activity that may raisequestions asto the companys honesty, impartiality, reputation orotherwisecause embarrassment to the company.

Mr Platt said it was not the affair that led to MrStoneciphersdismissal, but circumstances surrounding the romanticentanglementwhich reflected poorly on Harrys judgment and wouldimpair hisability to lead the company.

His removal heralds a new high water mark in the standardsofethics demanded of Americas company bosses. Rulesregardingprofessional behaviour have already been tightened afterthebillion dollar frauds that caused the collapse of EnronandWorldCom. The situation at Boeing shows that the personal livesofexecutives are now coming under increasing scrutiny, a move thatislikely to worry other business leaders.

Freada Klein, a consultant on business ethics, saidmaritalinfidelities would previously have passed by with awarning.

My concern in the current climate is that boards are actingoutof litigation avoidance, and still not acting out ofcarefullyconsidered principles about how do we make a decision, andwhatkind of behaviours do we want to reward, she said.

Mr Stonecipher, 68, came out of retirement only 15 months agotolead the company at a time when it was dogged by severalscandalsinvolving its relationship with the Pentagon, whichresulted in twoexecutives being jailed. He was widely reckoned tohave done aremarkable job in changing the Boeing culture andrevitalizing thebusiness with an aggressive marketing strategy at atime when itfaced increasing competition from Airbus, its chiefEuropean rival.Boeing shares rose by more than 50 per cent underhisstewardship.

Miss Peabody moved to Boeings London office in 1998, whereshespent three years in charge of sales at the companyscommercialjet operations. After moving back to the US she collectedan MBA atthe University of Washington. Soon after, she becameinternationalsales director for Connexion, a Boeing operation thatprovideshigh-speed internet and broadcast services for businessjets, military transports and government aircraft for highrankingofficials.

Later she worked at the office of the chairman in Chicagobeforejoining the Washington office as vice-president foroperations andcommercial activities as a manager for the lobbyingoperations.

The company refused to comment yesterday.

There is no suggestion that the affair with Mr Stonecipher hadanyinfluence over Miss Peabodys career or salary. She remains onthecompany payroll, although her position is understood to beunderreview.
