直到（双语加油站●跟我学）

　　句子：他直到半夜才上床睡觉。

　　误译：Until midnight he went to bed.

　　正译：

　　1) He didn’t go to bed until midnight.

　　2) Not until midnight did he go to bed.

　　解释：中国学习者使用until 时，容易出错。英语动词可以分为延续性动词和始动性动词。延续性动作表示一个动作延续到某个时刻才停止，英语用 until表达。例如：我们一直等到雨停了。We waited until the rain stopped.

　　他一直独自生活到现在。Until now， he has always lived alone.

　　始动性动作表示一个动作到某个时刻才开始，英语用 not until表达。例如：直到你做完这件事，你才能出去。You’re not going out until you’ve finished this.

　　till 与until是同义词。句首通常用until，而不用till。until 比till正式。till通常用在口语中。如活到老，学到老。Study hard till the last day of your life.

　　注意，延续性是对始动性的否定，像 stay = not yet leave；而始动性反过来是对延续性的否定，像 leave = no longer stay。例如：他在北京一直待到星期天才离开。

　　1) He stayed in Beijing until Sunday.

　　2) He didn’t leave Beijing until Sunday.

　　英语中有两个谚语使用了not …until结构，很像绕口令：Don’t trouble the trouble until the trouble troubles you.直到麻烦(烦恼)麻烦(招惹)到你，你再去麻烦(应付)麻烦(烦恼)。

　　A lesson learned isn’t learned until you learn it. 直到你真正吸取了教训，才算吸取了吸取到的教训。▲
