(赫然)US-Iraq-prisonerssched 11-17 0611 Ex-commander of Abu Ghraibprison says she was ascapegoatby Jerome BernardWASHINGTON, Nov 17(AFP) - The former UScommander of Abu Ghraib prisonsays that shewas held up unfairly asa scapegoat by male warriors but therealblame for the abusescandal rests with military leaders and theWhiteHouse. In her newlyreleased autobiography One Womans Army:The CommandingGeneral ofAbu Ghraib Tells Her Story, JanisKarpinski recounts her side ofascandal that led to her demotionand prompted international outrageover themistreatment of Iraqidetainees at the US military-runprison.While accepting her shareof the responsibility for some ofwhat occurredwhen she presidedover military police across Iraq,Karpinski says the abusesat AbuGhraib were not the work of a fewwayward soldiers and theirfemaleleader. They were the result ofconflicting orders andconfused standardsextending from the militarycommanders in Iraqall the way to the summit ofcivilian leadershipin Washington, shewrites. While other senior army officers have yetto be prosecutedor demoted,Karpinski said the male-dominatedmilitary quicklypinned blame on her afterthe scandal erupted in2004.When thingswent wrong at Abu Ghraib prison, nobody stood outas amoreconvenient target than the female general who looked so outofplace from theperspective of all those male warriors, shewrites. On the order of President George W.
