Would be language teachers everywhere have one thing incommon:they all wan

t some recognition of their professional statusandskills, and a job. The former requirement is obviously importantona personal level, but it is vital if you are to have any chanceoffinding work.Ten years ago, the situation was very different.Invirtually every developing country, and in many developedcountriesas well, being a native English speaker was enough to getyouemployed as an English teacher. Now employers will only lookatteachers who have the knowledge, the skills and attitudes toteachEnglish effectively. The result of this has been toraisenon-native English teachers to the same status as theirnativecounterparts (相对应的人) ? something they have always deservedbutseldom enjoyed. Non-natives are now happy ?linguisticdiscrimination (语言上的歧视) is a thing of the past.An ongoingresearchproject, funded by the University of Cambridge, asked asample ofteachers, teacher educators and employers in more than 40countrieswhether they regard the native/non-native speakersdistinction asbeing at all important. “NO” was the answer. As longas candidatescould teach and had the required level of English, itdidn’t matterwho they were and where they came from. Thus, a newform ofdiscrimination ? this time justified because it singled outtheunqualified ? liberated the linguistically oppressed (受压迫的).Butthe Cambridge project did more than just that: it confirmedthatthe needs of native and non-native teachers areextremelysimilar.
