An athlete is a person who trains for and competes in a sport. For example， Yao Ming is a very famous Chinese athlete: He competes in basketball. As the athlete competes， the crowd will cheer him/her on. "Cheer on" means that fans shout and make a lot of noise for their favorite athlete and/or team.
